Carlisle, Cumbria -travel information and accommodation

Carlisle’s location has been a vital part of its great character and history over the years. Set in the far north of England just south of Scotland, it has played an important role during times of unrest and has been heartily fought over many times.

Today Carlisle is the county town of Cumbria and is also one of Britain’s oldest cities.
The area was originally a Celtic settlement before becoming an important administrative centre during Roman times. This is evident from the famous Roman built Hadrian’s Wall constructed just to the north of Carlisle. Interestingly it is the Cumbrian section of the wall that survives today attracting many visitors. A look at the Carlisle Visitor Centre will soon acquaint you with the local history, as will the Tullie House Museum. Alternatively, take the Hadrian’s Wall National Trail that stretches through some stunning countryside.

Carlisle also boasts modern city amenities such as some great restaurants and fantastic shopping. The centre is pedestrianised making it particularly easy to wander around on foot, whilst the Sands Centre is the place to be for live music and drama. The city’s position also makes it an ideal stopping off point for those holidaying in the nearby Lake District or the Scottish Borders.
