Carlisle Cathedral is an impressive red sandstone building dating back to 1122 and a must see sight for most visitors to the area. The roof of the chancel is particularly beautiful as is the east window, a great example of 14th century stained glass.
Under the care of English Heritage is Carlisle Castle, with a history dating back over 900 years. It is a fine example of a Norman keep and its most famous prisoner was Mary Queen of Scots. A climb up to the top of the ramparts will reward you with great views out over Carlisle.
For an educational and fun day out visit the Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery. Here you’ll discover all you ever wanted to know about both local history and wildlife, with plenty of interactive exhibits too.
Having seen the historic sight, you might be in need of modern entertainment such as a game of laser quest. If so then take a trip to Victoria Viaduct where you’ll find Laserquest. Here you can battle against friends or family in this fun game suitable for big kids of all ages.
Anyone who enjoys the odd day at the races should definitely pay a visit to Carlisle Racecourse whilst they are in the area. Carlisle’s connection to horseracing dates back as far as the 16th century, but nowadays you’ll find the latest facilities from the new grandstand to a good choice of food and drink to make this a day out to remember.
